Modelling crop pest risks in China
Assimila is working with CAB International and the Chinese Academy of sciences on a Newton Fund project developing a system for crop pest risk modelling in China. The first phase of the project involves a feasibility study with two main objectives: first to use EO data to model crop damage risks from locusts and second to examine the potential for the use of bio-pesticides to control locusts. Assimila has been working on the second aspect, integrating EO and meteorological information to develop a diurnal surface temperature profile which is used to model the growth of bio-pesticides inside locusts. The project will provide information to help local pest control managers increase the use of bio-pesticides instead of chemical pesticides.
